A former University of the South (also known as Sewanee) women’s basketball head mentor was found to have violated NCAA sports activities betting policies, the NCAA declared Tuesday.

The mentor — a male who was not identified by title in the report — received a two-year present-trigger order for his violations, and the Tennessee university was set on probation for a yr. The probationary time period consists of necessary sports activities betting schooling for users of the college.

The NCAA located that the mentor wagered $93,000 on university and experienced sporting situations from January 2021 by March of 2023. About $28,000 value of wagers have been placed on school sporting occasions. Some of individuals wagers have been on women’s faculty basketball, though no bets have been placed on game titles involving Sewanee, a Division III program.

“Given the prevalence of sports activities wagering pursuits on school campuses, it is arguably even more significant that individuals closest to college student-athletes refrain from this sort of behaviors to guard college student-athletes,” a Division III Committee on Infractions reported through a press release.

Coach unnamed in report

While the coach went unnamed in the NCAA’s report, the program’s head mentor in March 2023 was Brody Curry. The Sewanee alumnus now coaches a superior college women’s basketball workforce in Tennessee, acquiring left Sewanee in July.

The Tennessee Athletics Wagering Council recommended Sewanee of the betting violations in March 2023. Curry was placed on go away in April 2023 and finally resigned in July of 2023.

“Brody has been an important part of the Sewanee relatives as a college student-athlete, an alumnus, an assistant with our men’s plan, and as the head mentor of our women’s basketball application,” Sewanee Director of Athletics John Shackelford reported in a July assertion that did not point out betting. “This new chapter in his daily life signifies a great option for his developing family members. He’ll be greatly missed by his college students, colleagues, and campus good friends, but will usually be a Sewanee Tiger with roots planted on the plateau.”
